「紅茶にミルクを注いだときとミルクに紅茶を注いだときでは味が
ちがうのよ」という婦人の問いに対してロナルド・フィッシャーは
どのような解答を用意したか――数理統計学と現実世界が接する３
０のエピソードを集めた本書は，いわば「統計学のポプリ」そのも
の．ゴルトン，ピアソン，フィッシャー，ネイマン，ウィルクス，
テューキーら名だたる統計学のゴッドファーザーたちが総出演．原
論文はもとより小伝や年表も付いていて，ネタ本としての資料価値
はとても高いと思う．

各章のタイトルがとってもおしゃれに感じられる．時系列の「マル
ティンゲール（martingale）」の語源が以前から気になっていたの
だが，造語者であるフランスのPaul Levyが賭け事のことばを転用
したことを知った．この第26章のタイトル「マルティンゲールの行
進」は，フランスの古い民話である「マルタン・ゲールの帰還」の
もじりだろう．こういう統計学エッセイがさらっと書けるのはうら
やましいかぎりだ．
